Transcript Request
The 2009 Institute will highlight the relation between linguistic structures and the ecologies in which they are embedded, including physical and psychological contexts, demographic and social contexts, and historical and geographic contexts. Courses emphasize a precise, sophisticated understanding of all aspects of linguistic structure from semantics and pragmatics through syntax and morphology to phonology and phonetics, in addition to all the dimensions of linguistic ecology.
Forum and Institute Lectures
Forum Lectures and lectures by holders of named chairs will be given every Thursday evening and on Sunday, August 9.
Conferences, workshops, and symposia will take place on weekends throughout the Institute. Details are available at the Institute
website (http://lsa2009.berkeley.edu/Events.html).
Affiliate Registration
Affiliate status is granted to faculty, researchers, and other non-students who wish to participate in the Institute.
Affiliates may audit courses and take part in
Institute activities. The fees for the 2009 Institute are $1,200 for 6 weeks or $700 for 3 weeks.
A principal source of student fellowship funds, this fee also covers all administrative costs including I.D. cards, access to
libraries, and receptions. Information is available at the Institute website
(http://lsa2009.berkeley.edu/Registration.html).
Affilliate registration is now available online.
Student Registration
All students who wish to attend the Institute, including those who have applied for or have been awarded an LSA fellowship,
must register as students attending the Institute. This involves registration in the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions in addition
to a special registration process for Institute course selection. Further information, including details concerning tuition,
fees, and international students, are available on the Institute website
(http://lsa2009.berkeley.edu/Registration.html).
Registration is now available for students in the University of California system; registration for other students will be available online beginning 17 February.
Early registration is encouraged due to the high demand for summer housing in Berkeley.
Student Fellowships
Fellowships are available on a competitive basis to those who have not completed their professional
training. To be eligible for fellowships, participants must be LSA members and must register to attend the Institute for 6 weeks
(for 8 LSA credits). Applicants in countries experiencing extreme economic hardship who are unable to remit dues
should contact the LSA. A sample application may be found
here.
The application deadline for Institute fellowships was 17 February 2009.
