Free LSA Membership for Recent Ph.D. Graduates
The LSA offers a year's free membership to recent recipients of the Ph.D., in recognition of their scholarly achievements as well the economic hardship faced by many new degree holders. To qualify for the free membership, individuals must:
- have received the Ph.D. within the past 12 months;
- have received the degree in Linguistics or, if the degree is in another field, have written a dissertation on a topic demonstrably linguistic in nature;
- provide proof to the LSA of receipt of the degree (waived for individuals nominated by their departments for the year's free membership).
This program applies both to individuals who are not yet members of the LSA (who will receive one year's free membership) and to individuals who are currently student members of the Society (who will have their membership status changed to "regular" and their membership extended for one year at no charge).
The benefits of membership in the LSA are numerous, and include a subscription to our quarterly journal, Language - the premier publication in the field - and eligibility to participate in LSA meetings at discounted member rates. A full list is available on our Member Benefits web page.

Instructions for Nonmembers
- Establish an LSA account. Choose "regular member" from the "Membership Type" drop-down list. Click the "submit" button.
- Verify the login information you have just entered and then confirm it by clicking on the "confirm" button.
- Enter your biographical and academic information and membership options (receipt of journal in hard copy or electronically; availability of your e-mail address and other information to other LSA members or to publishers) and click the "submit" button.
- Verify the information you have just entered and then confirm it by clicking on the "confirm" button.
- You will see a "Checkout" screen. DO NOT TAKE ANY FURTHER ACTION ON THE LSA WEBSITE. Instead, send an e-mail to lsa-phd@lsadc.org, giving your name, the date you received the Ph.D., attaching proof of receipt of the degree (individuals nominated by their departments for a year's free membership need not provide proof of degree), and indicating that you have completed the steps above.

Instructions for Current LSA Members
- Send an e-mail to lsa-phd@lsadc.org, giving your name, the date you received the Ph.D., attaching proof of receipt of the degree (individuals nominated by their departments for the year's free membership need not provide proof of degree), and indicating that you would like to take advantage of the year's free membership.
- LSA staff will change your membership status to "regular" if necessary and will extend your LSA membership by one year at no cost to you. We will send you an e-mail notification that we have done so.
